Éire dosen't mean Ireland, its a personal name of one of the wives of one of the three sons of Míl Espáine, and the name given to this Island

so it dosen't mean Ireland Ireland

    it means "Éire, Ireland"

    I stand corrected.
It means "Island of Ireland Ireland"

If that's the case, then what is the Irish for "Ireland"?

SPECIALISED LANGUAGE AVAILABLE FOR USE BY EU GOVERNMENTS

Interested parties are offered the use of a language specifically developed for employment in government service. The offer refers to Irish Gaelic (Simplified Form), which since the transition of the Irish nation to the the English language in the 19th century has been preserved in pristine condition and is now available under licence for foreign applications.

A unique feature of this language is that it is used only in officially sanctioned documents, and only by officials who have been employed by government for this purpose. Anything published in this language will never be read by anybody after it is printed, so governments using it can be assured of complete confidentialiaty for any subject matter. Pronunciation is a matter of free choice for users, in cases where voice articulation is considered necessary.

Licence holders will benefit from a Language Support Organisation, with staff employed by the Irish Government on a permanent and pensionable basis, and whose numbers have recently been greatly expanded. This organisation builds on eighy years experienc in the use of government language, without any leakage of the official language into the surrounding community ever having occurred, or the confidentiality of documents written in Irish Gaelic (Simplified Form) ever having been breached.

In fairness, it's only the EU.
The political establishment lacks both vision and courage.

That might be because the Finnish call their country Suomi, a term incidentally I had never heard of until this thread.

How often does anybody in Ireland (yes, "Ireland"!!!) ever call their country Eire?

We might as well just change our name to Eire "De Valera is a bollocks" the Republic of Rockall, Enya, Riverdance and U2 Ireland.

There is nothing wrong with calling ourselves Ireland. It's the reality what we call ourselves in everyday life. If the government tries to change the official description of our country, its nothing more than government and Gaeilge-elites trying to impose a different reality upon us by passing silly laws which are not grounded in the population at large. Newspeak ala 1984.

And Fun with Irish, very funny!
    Ich mag Steine!
