    Who are the cosy cartels?

A cosy cartel happens when you have two organisations which come together and use each other for personal and mutual gain, while ensuring that a third party is shut out and suffers.

In my view the list of cosy cartels in Irish society are as follows..

    1. Cosy cartel between the church and De Valera's Fianna Fail which culminated in the church being given special status in the 1937 constitution and cemented the church-state relationship.

We know now the damage this relationship had in future decades. The church helped out the politicians, allowing church gate collections etc. And in return, the politicians promised not to interfere in any business of the church including the running of their educational and correctional factilities.

Indeed, because of the special relationship between FF and the church, the state sent tens of thousands of people to religious correctional and educational facilities because FF perceived the church to be on their side, possibly give the students a pro FF education and the church could do no wrong.

    2. The Public Sector Unions and FF - Another cosy cartel, it is held behing closed doors, the results are not presented to the people to vote on, and in the end the taxpayer always ends up getting a bad deal, bonuses for PS workers without productivity increases.

    3. The main political parties - Evidence of this in the European Elections - Virtually no criticism of each other, only of up and coming political forces which represent the voice of the people. The rule of this cosy cartel is simple. Attack Libertas and anyone outside the main parties, but thou shalt not attack each other.

    4. FF and the banks - Again deals done with the banks behind closed doors with friends of FF. The Anglo golden circle, almost all FF and which will cost the taxpayer 300 million demonstrates a cosy cartel in operation, at the expense of the taxpayer.

    5. FF and the developers - developers allowed borrow hundreds of millions, even over a billion across several institutions and secured against a single property, now probably worthless, all because they were pro FF. Again in this cosy cartel the taxpayer is shut out and suffers.

It's time to put an end to the cosy cartels once and for all.

The Vintners (IVF) have phenomenal power and influence over FF governments. We've just had 2 successive budgets where duty on alcohol went untouched, with the exception of a 50 cents increase on a bottle of wine. They were worried it might cause a decline in business and intense lobbying was done. Yet the IVF and the publicans themselves were more than happy to rip the public off through incessant price hikes over the years.

Can anyone remember a budget in previous years when alcohol wasn't touched? Now, because there is a downturn we get 2 budgets in a row where it isn't touched, when it would have been one of the simplest taxes to raise. In Ireland's case probably the most reliable of the old reliables.

Then again, given the fact a lot of our current ministers also own pubs, I doubt it was a hard sell for the IVF.

ie ... FF & GP (the latter suffering interminably as a result of their foolishness) ... ... the 3rd party shut out/suffering may allude to the other pol parties .... but no brain surgery is required to realise it also includes the rest of us folk subjected to 2 yrs ish of the cosy cartel

For the day that's in it...

The original cosy cartel was that described by Lowry concerning Owen O'Callaghan (FF major donor, developer, Haughey-appointed Bord Gais director, paymaster of one Frank Dunlop) and CIE (run by O'Callaghan's friend and fellow FF appointee Dermot O'Leary) over a deal done on a site at Horgan's Quay in Cork. Lowry alleged that these FF semi-state figures were having him put under surveillance, which they denied.
