Michael Woods - Opus Dei member?

There have been rumours for many years that he is a member despite the fact that he has denied it in the press. However the fact remains that his actions in agreeing the deal with the religious orders were bizarre to say the least.

A cap on financial liability leading to a bill to the state of in excess of €1bn, effectively facilitating the perpetrators in the avoidance of criminal prosecution, and the exclusion of the AG from the negotiations (as he said in 2003 "The legal people simply couldn't have attended - it was a no-go area for them - they had fallen out with the religious.").

For a man supposedly tasked with protecting the interests of the state this simply does not add up and I feel his motivations, and indeed those of Bertie Ahern who tasked him with striking the deal and has backed him every step of the way since, have to be questioned.

If it could be proven that he was an opus dei member at the time he gave the church that sweet deal, could that be used as grounds for making the deal null and void, since he would have had a massive conflict of interest?

Whether he is or not, we've had Bertie, with his close links to the Catholic Church, especially the Archbishop's Palace in Drumcondra, and Dermot Ahern who professes to be a republican but wants to bring in a blasphemy law and who's a well-known socially conservative Catholic.

    That's just two.

I hope one of the newspapers does a feature about each and every member of the Dáil and Seanad, the judiciary and other prominent figures in Irish public life, and their links to the various churches.

The paedophiles, yes. But the members should certainly not be allowed in any public office.

People in positions of trust with their fingers crossed behind their backs when taking an oath to uphold the constitution should not be, by definition, in positions of authority.

They owe their loyalties elsewhere. Suppose someone senior in the guards had a blackmailable offense in their past- if found out they can be dealt with as sympathetically as the situation allows but they certainly can't be allowed to stay in their senior position.

Opus Dei, Knights of Colombanus etc owe their first and only loyalty to the modern Roman Empire, not to the Irish state. This is enough to boot them out of authority. The Irish Army asks recruits a question when they are signing up- 'Are you now or have you ever been a member of a paramilitary organisation?' Say 'yes' to that and its 'there's the door'.

Very good point, and it would also be timely prompt to ban members of Opus Dei from holding senior positions of power (both in the legislature and the judiciary) due to the potential conflict of interest.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

Ah the old lets advocate a witchhunt and destroy anybody who doesn't agree with your viewpoint. Joe McCarthy is alive and well.
