What was the experience of good members of the religious orders?

Cann anybody tell me where I can find infromation on what life was like for the good members of religious orders who worked in children's homes during the terrible period outlined in the recent government reports?

What sort of hours they worked? What was the ratio of children to staff? What happened to those who saw what was happening and took a stand? etc.

I ask this question because my experience of the church has generally been positive. The nuns that educated me where excellent, our local priests were always there in times of crisis and the church has been a great solice to my mother and other family members.

Given all this I find it hard to believe that all the members of the religious orders involved in child care were evil. What was life like for the dedicated and genuine nuns and brothers? How could they allow this stuff to go on? What attempts did they amke to stop it? etc.

Do not get me wrong. I accept the details of the report and feel action must be taken to punish the guilty and compensate the victims. but I woud just like to get some sort of insight into what life was like for the genuine people who gave their lives to the church and worked in these institutions.

Well, if you're to believe the newspapers the Mercy Order sent in two nuns to keep an eye on Nora Wall. The first was sent in as a junior and the second as her superior. They both ended up having lesbian affairs with her.

I know there are plenty of cases like this, but I have not heard teh story from people who went into this area of work with good intentions. What happened to them, what is their story?

May I put it to you like this: I was educated by the Christian Brothers - I reckon about 10% of them were very good (even saintly) men, 80% were so so, and 10% were pure evil.

That saintly priest came over to Ireland in the 1940s and ruthlessly denounced the industrial schools here as 'a scandal to the nation'. He was attacked by the Irish newspapers for his comments.
