Dutch to close 8 prisons - can we use them?

Why can we not send our crims to NL? We could declare part of the prison as Irish land similar to an Embassy and throw the scum in there.

Surely they could do it cheaper there? Why build new prisons when europe has free space.
    We need breeding room!

Brilliant idea! We are already doing something similar with people waiting for hospital treatment - the National Treatment Purchase Fund.
Seeing as this Government can't organise a piss-up in a brewery, maybe we should 'externalise' all our services.
Driving tests in Wales? Broadband from Iceland?

I'm glad you agree! We should try to stay away from things we are abysmal at, like managing prisons. If we save money here we can spend it somewhere else, perhaps more effectively. We stick to a core business of Ireland - whatever that is.

Let's ignore all the issues that might arise because Ireland has signed up to various international conventions on human rights, treatment of prisoners, and so on, and assume that we could save some money by "outsourcing" our prisons. The question that then arises is why look only at the Netherlands? Surely the Russians have a few spare camps in the Gulag and might give us a bette deal. And don't our EU partners the French still own Devil's Island? The prison there might need a bit of renovation, but wouldn't that make a grand FAS scheme.

Tongue in cheek or not, Gulag sounds fine for me. The rest of your post is wrong.
I guess we must be a bit behind the curve because Belgium will be sending prisoners there - Is that because Belgium and NL are dictatorships which haven't signed those treaty you are on about?
Yeah we could save money, we need the space URGENTLY and there is no human rights issue - unless you count the needless victims caused by a paralysed legal and penal system?

When I mentioned problems with the conventions, I was only thinking of the situation if we sent people to places like Russia, not other signatory countries.
