How to Stop Clerical Child Abuse?

As some users of this website have pointed out, we cannot be certain that this is not still going on.

May I therefore make the following suggestions as to how the problem might be addressed:

    1. Abolish the 'first confession'. Indeed, abolish all unsupervised 'confessions' by minors.

    2. No clergyman should have unchaperoned access to a minor.

    3. Abolish compulsory celibacy for Catholic clergy.

    4. Permit openly gay men to become priests.

Allow Teachers to report suspected abuse.

Allow Boards of management to remove Bishops who are not doing their jobs in looking after children.

Give the department powers to over rule boards if there is evidence of abuse.

Pleas let us acknowledge that it is not only clerics who abuse children, and also that most clerics are just as appalled as we are about what was done to children

Hm. I know that its possible for bad stuff to go on and for people not to be aware of it, but I think it was too systemic in the Church. People knew.

Certainly in places like Artane it was impossible not to see certain things.

1 old brother to cook for 700 boys. 2 cooks and several maids to cook for 24 "Brothers". They were starving and the "Brothers" lived off them.

Most abusers today, and in the past are married men, so maybe the solution is to prevent all men from having access to children.

I notice that you raised the "First Confession" or Sacrament of Reconciliation, to give it its correct name, on other threads as well. On a point of information - the ceremony held for First Confession these days is a million miles away from the archaic little closed wooden booth scenario. It's held in an open forum with parents/guardians, teachers and "significant others" all in attendance. In addition our chaplain always hears confessions in an open room in the eyeshot of teachers. A lot of these child safety concerns have been comprehensively addressed already.

Realistically speaking, if the majority of humanity remain non-believers, it doesn't matter. No problem! The problem is that the majority of humanity have lost or ignore the deeper human values - compassion, a sense of responsibility. That is our big concern.
