    Dole money to save jobs?

    Just saw this on Breakingnews.ie:

The Minister for Social and Family Affairs says her department is examining the possibility of diverting social welfare cash to a scheme to save jobs.

Mary Hanafin says the funds would be aimed at keeping employees in a three-day week rather than losing their jobs.
No more detail than that though. I understand they have a similar scheme in Germany. Personally, I think it can only be a good idea - what do other p.iesters think?
Nothing will motivate the lazy / apathetic / Americanised / west-British types to embrace their culture and the Irish language.

Yes, there's a scheme in Germany.

Thousands of workers there in the auto industry are benefitting from it. They're being held in employement by the auto companies with the support of payments like this from the government.

I'm dubious about the idea. Cheap employers could abuse the process, but on the whole if it means getting people back to work then i'm all for it.

And whats wrong with cutting the dole for this? Do you want people to be put back to work AND claim the full dole?

No, im just saying that they are buttering up joe public for a cut in the dole.
Afaik there is already a scheme there whereby if you work less then 3 days a week you can claim dole on the other days.

Would they not just be using the dole money that these people would be claiming to subsidise whatever company is involved, rather than slashing everyones social welfare.

I thought that was more or less what she was proposing.

Sounds like a half decent idea, for a change.

Why not include education and training as well? It would have to be short modular courses so people could go back to work if the opportunity came up - languages - ECDL etc.

School leavers and college leavers are going to need something.

Its a good idea for those companies that are suffering because of the downturn and are adequately, not overly resourced, i.e., there are companies using the downturn as an excuse to trim the fat so they'd rather be shot of the people rather than keep them in their employ. Companies that are suffering but have lost business, temporarily, will benefit if they can keep people on because the cost of losing knowledge and experience is often a lot higher in terms of the ability to recover quickly in an upturn than the immediate savings that can be made by cutting people totally.

I think it's a crap idea. People on the dole aren't exactly coining it in. People on the dole get just about enough to get by. One of the measures of a good society is how it treats the poor. And apart from a few saintly people, most wouldn't chose poverty if they had a choice, and even when it comes to those saintly people, elective poverty is not poverty. IMO the minister shouldn't be looking at diverting dole money away from those who need it.
