I see it like this. Its got nothing to do with getting the local person in.
What goes on at national level policy wise in the long run is much more likely to have an effect on our lives than fixing the local bridge or getting €5000 funding for FAS to tart up the cemetry, and too many people think that these are the criteria to use when deciding who to vote for.
John Browne has had choices in his life. He had to decide whether to support Charlie Haughey as Taoiseach. And Bertie. And Cowan. All that time you and your family were paying his wages. Of course he is nice at the door. He works for you, and wants to keep the job. However he has not earned his wages. Every time he got a choice about taking a decision that would directly impact on your life, that of your husband, and those of your kids, he took the wrong one. He had to decide on lots of stuff. When decisions had to be taken about eroding the taxbase, and giving tax-breaks to dodgy mates, he always took the wrong decision. Within 10 miles of your house, I am willing to bet that there is a school based largely in prefabs. Thats children. Probably those of your lovely neighbours. Why is this? Did your TD say to McCreevy and Cowan- "hold on a minute. We do not need to reduce the tax bill to our dodgy mates this year, or to this extent. Why dont we instead collect this money, and use it to build schools? I have spoken to some of my colleagues and we will not support you in the Dail on this. Come back to us when there are no schools in prefabs and then we will consider it"
He did not do this. There was absolutely no reason for him not to. There are probably 100 other examples posters here could quote. No amount of constituency work can equate to the legislative power he had, but choose not to wield. It was more important for him to support moral legislation, in the national interest, than to help fill in a passport application form for your auntie
You could consider saying to your lovely neighbours - "please do not call to my door with him. If you do then you know what will happen. He is a person who ruined the country while I was paying his wages, and he has not earned my respect , and does not deserve it at my door, on my house."
That may not be any use to you, but you did ask!
