11.21 am :Greens raise concerns over government programme - The Irish Times - Sun, May 17, 2009

Interesting that they consistently put a badly negotiated Programme for Government
above the obvious and ongoing difficulties that were already starting to surface long
before that particular election (and mostly as older users know were discussed on here
    and in other lists )

Gormley is just trying to see what else he can get from Biffo to stay.

Unforuntately for the Green Party, they forgot about the law of diminishing returns; the longer they stayed in Government the harder they would find it to disassociate themselves from all the actions that the goverment is responsible for.
They are now in the position that if they abandon ship now they will be seen as the rats who deserted the sinking ship whereas they want to be seen as the innocent passengers who have discovered that the destination this particular ship is heading to is not the one which they have signed on for.

Their strategy is clear: they are trying to maintain a core vote by 'implementing their agenda', so they can claim credit for green initiatives in government while disassociating themselves from the rest of the government's performance, hence the emphasis on the PfG.

Greens have failed to implement sustainable Government

One of the fundamental objectives of the Green Party in government, if they were to be true to their environmental principles, had to be to reduce the size of Government and the structures that government surrounds itself with. Sustainability requires reducing the structure and bureaucracy of government to the minimum size consistent with effective government.
Instead the Greens have show themselves to be as keen on empire building as any other party; worse they seem to be an old fashioned tax and spend party which enevitably means increasing the size of the econonmy and thus its capacity to produce harmful environmanetal emissions.
The Green Party is now a traditional political party which finds it convenient to exploit environmental concerns for politicial gain rather than an environmental movement.
