    Gombeen man: a pointless term?

Has the gombeen slur become pointless over time, seen as it used to throw at any political one doesn't agree with?

Interesting question, but I don't think so. It's culturally significant in that it recalls a time when self-evidently questionable businesspeople held high standing in the community and a strange quirk that some people still identify in Irish culture. For that reason, it does have a point.

Unfortunately, it is flung around with wanton abandon, and the law of diminishing returns has set in. the gombeenman culture, whether it still exists or not, is/was quite sickening and using it as a common term of abuse robs it of potency.

Is it over used ? If so, what does that tell you ?

Is it not a apt description of the sizeable group ? Why not use Gombeens or Gombeenites instead ?

Its not a slur, its a scientifically accurate term, which decribes the Irish spiv perfectly.
