    It is not news

The idea that Arishbishop Tutu would be wasting time calling for an investigation into this melodrama whilst people are being murdered on a daily basis by Mugabee's thugs , his next door neighbours, would be funny if it were not so absurd.

A bit lost here. What has Tutu said about Mugabe and thugs in past? Why would Tutu be bothered about Ireland?
Is the current protest about the giving away of national assets to Shell and others by FF
    or
Safety issues concerning pipe location and plant refinery at Bellnaboy
    or both

"silly protest" you say? The Irish people have been robbed of billions of euro worth of natural resources and thats what you think of it?

To get the resources in other parts of the world usually requires going to war, assassinating political leaders & activists...but not in Ireland, when you have Ray Burke & Bertie Ahern to hand it over for free, and then make extra tax concessions!!

The robbery of our resources should be headline news, and so should the heavy handed tactics of Shell security-but the media black it out.

[ps-keep an eye out for the blackout on Bilderberg meeting coming up this weekend in Greece. Around 150 of the planets most influential people gather for an annual conference to discuss the most pressing global issues which we face, yet it won't get a mention anywhere.]

Does anyone seem bothered by the use of IRMS security by Shell?

..and the IRMS connection to Shell activities in Ireland & Bolivia? (operating as "security" for gas projects of Shell)

He has a long association with County Mayo, going back to 1991 when he led the Famine Commemoration Walk in Doolough. See, for example, this page.

And, to paraphrase Amblincork, the idea that Archbishop Tutu would ignore injustice in Ireland as well as in Africa would be funny if it were not so absurd.

According to the Irish Times Shell to Sea aren't being forthcoming with details:
[COLOR=Green]A different version of events – from Shell sources – has it that, after some 18 hours under the truck, Corduff got out to stretch his legs and have a pee. At which point he was grabbed by security men, restrained and taken to hospital by an ambulance they called. There is support for some of this version from an unlikely source: the website indymedia.ie which supports the protesters. It asserts Corduff “had briefly gotten out from under the truck to stretch his legs”.
    ...
I asked Shell to Sea last Wednesday whether Corduff would detail his injuries and publish his hospital records to confirm his medical condition on admission. The request was acknowledged but I have yet to obtain the information.

This is beginning to look like a hoax story ...

Apologies on digging up an old thread, but I’ve been Googling Rossport for the past couple of days (I really should have something better to do. Maybe I’ll open a new thread on ‘how do I get a life’).

Anyway, this Tutu statement causes me a slight puzzle. The full text of his statement of 11 May seems to be available on the internet in several places. For example:
The Shell to Sea site have it. Some crowd called Global Community Monitor have it. And something called the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre has a copy in Word format. From what I can see, they all seem to have the same version.

The Mayo News says, when reporting on this statement
“I wish to support calls made by Afri and others for a national and international investigation into this incident and for steps to be taken to ensure that all parties, particularly those representing the state, demonstrate a commitment to non-violence and the protection of human rights,” continued Rev Tutu.
Yet, if you check any and all of the links to Tutu’s full statement, there is no reference whatsoever to a call for a “national and international investigation”. Tutu’s statement certainly is sympathetic to Willie Corduff. But the words quoted by the Mayo News do not appear in his statement. Unless I'm linking corrupted versions - in which case I'd welcome being linked to the right one.

BFD, I hear you say. And maybe it is. But the reason I’m raising this is because this claim by Mayo News gets picked up in turn by Miriam Cotton, who says
Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa has also issued a statement in support of Corduff and called for an independent international inquiry into the events of 23rd April and the project as a whole.
She feels the lack of interest in this (and some other statements of support from abroad) is evidence of Irish media bias.

However, what I’m actually finding as I Google is it tends to be the pro-Shell to Sea spin that’s a bit shoddy. But just focusing on this point, does this suggest that coverage of Tutu’s statement is a little more puzzling than Cotton suggests. Where did Mayo News get the version that called for an international enquiry? Why does this seem to be missing from the version generally available on the internet? Presumably the statement was drafted for Tutu by people in Ireland. Did he pull back from authorising a statement to the effect that the Irish State needed to be subjected to an international investigation, with Mayo News perhaps running with an earlier unapproved version?

I'd be interested if anyone can shed any light.
However, banks know they have a duty of care to their clients and I'm sure that this should prevent them lending irresponsibly.

That's weird speculation on your part, Schuhart, especially considering Tutu's high profile. He's in the international news again today.

When is Willie Corduff going to let someone take a photo of the 'terrible injuries' he received during the incident in question?
A demagogue is someone who will preach doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots.
