The Holy Father was a great man who held the line between traditional Orthodoxy and Modernity pretty well IMO.
He knew that if the Catholic Church was to embrace any and every modern fad it would only damage the Church in the long term.
By its Nature the Church changes but slowly over the course of any one persons lifetime but change nonetheless it does.
The establishment of the Vatican State in 1929 and The Second Vatican Council under Pope John XXIII (1958-1963) were the major events in the development of the Church during the 20th Century.
Pope John Paul II followed in the aftermath of great change that whetted the appetite of some for even more transformations than the Church could comfortably handle.
I don't think he was quite as Conservative, especially compared to his predecessors, as many now think.
Regardless of his Theological Position there is no doubt he was loved and respected by hundreds of millions around the World.
In Ireland especially he will be sadly missed.
