Irish Political Parties - Whats the difference?

What is the difference between the main political parties in Ireland?

I understand we have Fianna Fáil, Fianna Gail, Labour, and the Greens as the major parties.

But how are they all different?

I used to vote conservative in the UK, so which of the above are similar in policies and style. (If its Fianna Fáil I guess im screwed!).

Also does Ireland have any Far Right and Far left political parties?

    Thanks.

    They're not

Take your pick of any of the above (and you're screwed anyway because they are all the same).

No far right parties - although there are individuals on the far right

Far left parties - Socialist Party - in reality a left party - given that the rest are right-wing (although seeing as you vote Tory - anyting to the left of the Liberals would be far-left in your eyes).

    Thanks for the replies.

Wow, so there is very little to choose between the political parties in Ireland.

How do you decide on whom to vote for ?

Surely there must be a thirst for a party that actually offers real change?

There's a thirst to get rid of Fianna Fail. Anyone but Fianna Fail is the national sentiment, and thank goodness for that.

If you care about equality-cultural economic and social.

If you care about internatioanal aid for less developed contries.

If you believe in rights for workers, rights for the GLBT community.

If you want excellent public services - education and health - free at the point of use and financed by progressive tax.

If you believe that the economic development of this country requires more home grown business talent, and control of monetary and fiscal levers back in accountable hands.

If you believe that public policy should be aimed at helping the least well off, those living in deprived areas.

Then there is only one party - Sinn Féin.

If you care about election promises that are never costed, punishment beatings that are never condemned....I could go on.

You guys (SF) have an almost quasi cultish way of supporting SF. You seem to ignore the terrible things which were done.

And if you don't you can be part of the 95%, so don't say you have no choice

I think the nearest thing to the British conservatives is FF.

thier is no equivelent to the conservatives in ireland , fianna fail and fine gael only differ in style , thier is no difference in policy , both are centrist parties with fianna fail left or right win depending on which ever possition suits at the time , presently they are firmly left wing

you have to realise that people for the most part dont vote based on issues in this country , the vast majority of people vote based on which way their family tree voted , bizzare i know but hardly anyone sees it as being in anyway peculiar
