Not to sound somewhat harsh, but I must echo the above sentiments somewhat. It is of course sad that a very young man lost his life but I don't see the special interest in this story simply because he was born in Dublin. Granted this may sound sectartian but it isn't a case of us losing 'one of our own'. He was born here and that is all. His death isn't anymore newsworthy than that of any UK born soldier, as uncomfortable as it is to reduce a mans life to newsworthiness.

    RIP
Mods, could someone monitor this thread. A young man probably with Family here is dead, Whilst we shouldn't stop these threads from appearing it is already obvious that a lot of juvenile posters (see above) will not treat this with any decorum.
I am not saying that posters apposing this young mans choice should be stopped, just asked to behave respectfully, those who post just to offend will flock to threads like this.

Edit = MacCoise iis an Example of what I mean. not the one directly above,

What are you trying to express here? That his death is meaningless? That you don't care? A better way to express your lack of care would have been to remain silent.

An Irish man was killed in the line of duty in a foreign country. Show some respect.

    Sheese...
    All generalisations are false.

How about people stop starting these meaningless threads then they won't be offended. I fail to see the relevance of where the soldier is from to politics.ie. People who start these threads are looking for people to act "disrespectfully" so they can alight their moral high horse. Now stop trolling.

I agree, they are two sides of the same coin. But these threads will be started and I just think the least we can do is ask for moderation.

Over 25% of British soldiers were Irish born in the early 19th century. A disproportionate amount of soldiers were Irish. It could be argued that Irish people were the driving force behind the British Empire at its peak.

The difference now is that Irish born individuals serving in the British Army are few and far between. I'm not convinced that this story is newsworthy, but I suppose it shows that there are still those out there who are willing to enlist, rightly or wrongly.

You know, I'd disagree. As clanrickard says this thread wasn't started so people could express their regret.

Its a legitimate thing to question why someone from Dublin feels like joining a foreign army knowing full well his chances of going to war are very high.

To add, personally my attitude to this news is that anyone foolish enough to do what he did shouldn't be held up as an example to anybody of anything. Pity the Irish media will be full of praise for the bloke. Perhaps his funeral will make the front page of a few dailies again. Its good news fodder I suppose. His death will mean nothing more, an excuse for an op-ed pushing an agenda and a snazzy picture or two in the Irish Times.
As the great warrior poet Ice Cube once said, 'if the day does not require an AK, it is good.'
