    Compensation cons

Has the country gone mad? According to a report in today's Irish Times, an Aer Rianta employee was awarded 15,000 euros compensation for the stress she claims she underwent after taking a bomb scare call at Dublin Airport.

The receptionist claimed that after the call, her mouth later came out in ulcers, her stomach was "in bits" and she had to stay in bed for 1½ years.

There's a picture of the claimant in IT. In all fairness, her obesity could have caused any of the problems she claims she experienced.

Its cases and payouts like this that give the Courts, the Judiciary and the Legal Profession their "Four Goldmines" reputation.

Aer Rianta should have fought this pile of bull all the way to the end.

If the stress and fright of a 1 minute phonecall did this to her, imagine the state that Air-Traffic controllers, pilots, doctors, nurses and paramedics have to go through every day. Should they all sue the state??

Aer Rianta has forked out taxpayers money to a gold-digger. Heads should roll at their legal department. But of course its a State body. And heads never roll when taxpayers money is wasted

She claimed she put on four stone in weight following what, in fairness to her, must have been a fairly traumatic experience.

She became afraid to leave her house, and eventually afraid to leave her bed.

She received no training on how to deal with such a phone call and received no help or counselling following the incident.
The standard of excellence is an infinite suggestiveness, naturalism is the one thing to be condemned.

Whilst I agree that training and possible counselling should have been provided, the quoted figure of 15,000 is extremely excessive. What I would have prefered to have seen would be possibley a smaller payout to cover any cost incurred for counselling etc. and maybe some system put in place to deal with this sort of thing (hoax calls, stress etc.)

Having little knowlege of the case I wouldnt be quick to call her a gold digger, but it doesnt sit well with what I know of it.
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.

why does it seem to some people that this womans weight is an issue ?

This is typical male gendered prejudice against an over weight woman. Had the person involved been an extremely good looking woman I doubt such disparaging commentary would be made.

This is typical misogyny, wrapped up in a right wing rant designed to deny people their rights. Typical its a PD, and the right wing of FG which are involved in this villification.

I once received a bomb scare call when I was working as a security guard. Scared the willies out of me. Suddenly this heavy cloak of responsibility descended on me knowing that people's lives were at stake according to the speed of my reaction.

I presume that you're referring to me?

First of all, I never even mentioned her weight. But sher when would little things like what people actually said start to matter to you?

Secondly, the lady in question seemed to make an issue of her own weight as part of her court case, attributing it to the "shock" she suffered.

    From RTE:
Ms Lynch claimed the shock of the call, which turned out to be a hoax, led to her being unable to leave her bed for 18 months and put on four stones in weight
She brought it up, so its fair game for Dee Four (who by the way seems sympathetic towards her) or anyone else to bring up the issue if they wish

I'm not misogynist, I just think 15,000 is way too much for this kind of thing. There are plenty of men out there too with spurious claims and if this was an overweight male receptionist, I'd have written the same.

I'm neither a PD nor FG by the way. Seeing that you did bring party affiliation into it, I do think it's ironic to see a Shinner defending the fights of a telephone receptionist who was confronted with a hoax bomb warning. How many hundreds of receptionists do you think are out there who received real and deadly bomb warnings from your friends in the Republican Movement over the years? What compensation did they ever get. Will SF set up a special compensation fund for them?

As regards the allegations of sexism, to paraphrase your good self, if Lucinda Creighton was an extremely ugly looking woman, would you have made such positive commentary about her as below:

In fairness thats a crap photo of miss creighton. I've seen her look a hell of a lot better than that.

Still she's no Toireasa. Or even a Liz.
