Well time will tell but in other Countries being Mayor of a major City can be a very powerful political platform.

    The Mayor of Paris

    The Mayor of New Yoork

    The Mayor of Moscow

and of course cuddly Boris across the water

are all platforms for greater things.

Of course not everyone suceeds but they are coveted posts all the same.

Maybe our own Mayorship might one day be such a launching pad?

Look how hard London had to fight to get a directly elected Mayor, and we evolved from a UK based system. The French have always had a sort of quasi Central/Local system with Cabinate Ministers holding posts along with Mayoral titles.

If, and thats a big if, it is given sufficient power, it would definately be a launching pad. Indeed, there would be sufficient room for a Dublin Mayor to eclipse his/her party leader!

If Bertie wants to run let him, the bigger issues will be the amount of fools who actually give him a first preference vote.

Would Dublin's Lord Mayor necessarily HAVE to be a member of a political party?

If not, there is scope for great things for Dublin!
