I also hope he runs. And is suitably humiliated, Royston like.

The breaking news headline is misleading, Gormley said no more than diplomatic fence-sitting stuff. Ahern is obviously unfit to run a corner shop though.

Theres something deeply odd about this.
Becoming elected Lord Mayor of Dublin is hardly the sort of ambition we would expect from Ahern. He already held this job more than 20 years ago and went on to become Minister for Labour, Minister for Finance, Leader of the Opposition and Taoiseach afterwards. He should surely have his sights set much higher than this.
His reputation is about to be shredded though - in fact, its already started with people finally beginning to wake up to the con job that he's presided over for the past 10 years. The double whammy will come from the Mahon Tribunal Report next year.
It might be a hint that he can forget about any plans for the Áras.

I think John should have seen the way that this would have been spun, why didn't he state the obvious that Ahern, is not fit for public office. Cowen wouldn't have liked it but at least it might help shore up the green vote, if they were seen to return to speaking the truth and principals.

He failed Dublin in every single way possible. Pathetic public transport, inadequate schools, creaking wastewater and sewage infrastructure, sprawl beyond the sprawl, people dying on trolleys in Beaumont A&E, dereliction on Main Street, congestion and the creation of the Dublin diaspora all over Leinster. I hope he's ******************************g proud.

Bertie Ahern did nothing for Dublin, a waste of space. If he put his name forward so would I. Dublin deserves someone better than this lying, double-talking, incompetent, stuttering, mumbling, unskilled, unqualified, plamassing, glad handing snivelling relic of Old Oireland.

Hopefully Fianna Fail will have been eradicated from the City Council and the 3 County Councils by election time and my fellow Dubs will have woken up to the damage done by this cabal of cowboys over the past 15 years.

If any Green comes near my door in the next 5 weeks I will fcking reef them apart over Gormley's comment, especially if it's John himself.

Wow. A whole thread about something somebody didn't say.
A demagogue is someone who will preach doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots.

I suppose the salary will be 500,000 for starters. If the people of Dublin elect that Grubby little man they will deserve what they get. He will destroy the City and build his BERTIE Bowl (TROUGH). The man is a disgrace and has been the main contributor to our present difficulties.

Reading the article it's less clear if that's what John intended to say. What's going on?

He would be the real life Mayor Quimby. Life imitating art.

Mayor 'Diamond' Joe Quimby: Can't we have one meeting that doesn't end with digging up a corpse?

Mayor 'Sterling' Bertie Ahern: Oh, dear God. Can't this town go one day without a riot? (possible future quote)

I sure hope not. Though there was a letter in the indo today about how great Charles Haughey was just because he shook hands and read a poem to somebody. It reminded me of when you hear about some Russians pining for Stalin. 'ah things were great then....' It is frightening that people vote for people just because they said hello or something to you.

Hopefully. I hope Gormley said this, intended it to be inane, but was secretly thinking 'Ahern represents all that is unacceptable about politics'.

I hope. Chances are he was.
