    More revelations about Gama Construction!!!

Fair play to Joe Higgins TD and Councillor Mick Murphy of the Socialist Party for their great work in exposing one of, if not tHE greatest Labour scandal in this country in recent memory...

What do people here think of the whole GAMA issue???
IT IS BETTER TO DESERVE A MEDAL AND NOT GET ONE, THAN TO GET A MEDAL AND NOT DESERVE IT

On the issue of foreign workers being paid less than Irish workers, well by that standard, every time you buy almost anything you are exploiting a worker in China.
So let's not buy any more sports gear, tvs, ipods, computers, washing machines.
Joe Higgins is a sanctimonious pain in the behind.

If a Turkish company contracts to come here and build a road faster and cheaper than an Irish one then that's fine by me.
The workers might be paid less than Irish workers but when they return home the money they've made makes them far more than if they'd done a similar job at home (assuming there was work to be had there).

I don't think that there's any doubt that Joe Higgins is the most effective politician in the country. (And I say this as a supporter of waste charges. )

I agree Larkinite, it's an absolute disgrace. As far as I understand it, they were receiving only 2:20 euros per hour with no overtime and their conditions left a lot to be desired. I remember seeing them working here in Cork City on the Ballincollig bypass at all hours and on Sundays aswell (now its made clear due to their disgracefully low hourly rate).
So on top of this slave labour they were also being robbed by their employer!

And then we have the pompous head in the sand postings of TheBanned in agreement with this, not only immoral but unlawful state of affairs!

Just to taking TheBanneds point to its logical conclusion. What he's saying is its ok to allow Irish employment, consumer and enviromental laws to be ignored by a foreign company working here. That this company can treat their workers like some form of bonded slave labour, the environment like a rubbish tip, consumer rights and quality of life as nonexistent. Eh and that they can ignore Irish employment law. In effect that the worst employment conditions can pertain for immigrant labour alongside our superior conditions and that when their contracts are up, they'd better get home sharpish.

How many Irish companies would use this as a flag of convenience and suddenly base themselves in say China and then employ people here under these conditions?

That would be a return to the horrors of bonded slave labour and the worst of market fundementalism.

George Monbiot wrote an article which is 110% relevant to the subject of this thread. Read it here:

    and be happy.
We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when creating them

Fair enough. But that was only part of the point. The rest was that we shouldn't trade with China.

Ye there is a lot of doubt.

Fair play to him though for highlighting this disgrace.

I may not agree with nearly all of his policies but he is an effective campaigner.

Actually it wasn't. His point was that we trade with China so that makes Gama ok. Typical tactic, try to set the rules on his own terms. We can't complain about Gama, a company breaking our laws in our territory, unless we first stop trading with China.

Well, not quite - the implication was that either we criticize both or we are not in a position to criticize either.
