Dublin bike rental scheme to start in July

Hundreds of bicycles will reportedly be available to rent in Dublin in just two months' time.

Was in Paris recently and they have an excellent system there. A Parisian friend told em the cost and though I can't rememeber the exact details, I think it was about 30 Eur per annum, thoough there are limitations, such as you can only use the bike for 1 hour before returning it to a stand etc.

In Dublin, expect the scheme to cost at least triple.

That's a great development. I know the same scheme operates elsewhere, e.g. Barcelona, and has been really successful. I don't know Dublin that well, so I do wonder how bike-friendly it is. I guess more bike lanes will be added to accompany the bikes for rent. I hope people don't abuse the system. Should definitely be extended to other Irish towns and cities.

too little, maybe too late.... DCC have shafted the people. I hope cllr is around to give it the perspective of the elected members who weren;'t even allowed see the contract. I applaud any initiative to get people on bikes but this is a p1ss poor deal compared to other cities

as for the OP's "just 2 months time", this scheme has been bangin round for 2 years or so and they were promised last year, then February, now it's July

Main issue will be cost. Scheme could have been set up years ago. In Paris the bikes are electronically tagged, as are the swipe cards used to access them. Very simple, cost effective, and abuse proof system. Plus these bike stands are often near metro and bus stops, so there is seemless integration with public transport if people are going longer distances.

Here it will be based in a field, cost a fortune, and won't make any sense.

The company which runs the scheme, JCDecaux, says it can no longer afford to operate the city-wide network because of theft
Over half the original fleet of 15,000 specially made bicycles have disappeared, presumed stolen.
