I presume that this post opens a thread in which we can acknowledge that the particular form of commeration chosen to mark the 90th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising was NOT a political embarassment, as a question posed in a thread (now locked) prior to the event, had suggested.Originally Posted by David Cochrane
The grudging endorsement of the event by the 'Indo' is probably as close to praise as we are likely to get from a journal noted for its enthusiastic endorsement for what is popularly called the "revisionist" wing in Irish historical writing.
A blow to revisionism on a nuclear scale. But the war is not over yet...we'll need more of this to finish off support for revisionism and seoninery. Next time make it 10,000 men and women.
Lets throw a few more people on to hospital trolleys and get a few more handouts from Europe - then we could make it 20,000 omodans celebrating some auld terrorists...

Generally unionists do not celebrate murderers and terrorists, let alone elect them. That is a big difference between unionism and republicanism.
How dare you call our army "omadans". They have served in their thousands in trouble-spots across the world and sometimes paid for their lives. Take that back!Originally Posted by true04

I value very highly the contribution our security services have made to this country. They have often paid with their lives. eg remember the fatalities during the search for IRA kidnappers near Ballinamore in the eighties, the Adare incident etc. As part of UN forces they have also made quite some contribution to world peace.
Parading to celebrate auld terrorists does nothing for them in the eyes of many.

The parade was a spectacular success, Ahern’s judgment on this issue has been completely vindicated!
It'll definitely rank up there with his other major achievements - the Good Friday Agreement, EU Presidency, Social Partnership etc.
I was sceptical at first but have to say the events were very dignified and well organised. Having been on O'Connell St during the riots, I had feared the glorification of violence by a military parade would merely inflame the situation. However, I now realise how important reaffirming the legitimacy of a disciplined, legal army as the expression of sovereignty is.
In terms of Ahern, his judgment may have been shrewd but always will be tarnished for announcing the move at the FF Ard Fheis without consulting the other parties.

The Irish Armed forces were commemorating those who declared Ireland an Independent State and the fact that those who did so were prepared to stand up for that right with the force of arms which proved necessary.
the only parading that is done for the benifit of terrorism are the many right wing marches held each year on July 12th which celebrate a particular Dutch Terrorist.
