Lenihan leads , the world follows

There was an interesting programme on ch4 last night. Dispatches did a report on the events leading up to the banking crisis in England. One throw away comment was that Britain had no choice but to back up the banks after the Irish finance minister had started the ball rolling.
Then it went on to say that it was so much of a sucess that the world followed Britain's lead ( after it followed Lenihan).
Maybe he is doing better than we are giving him credit for.

In international finance circles , Ireland lost a lot of creditability by the bank guarantee scheme, as other governments had to follow whether they liked it or not....
Brian & Brian stated that it was an international success , it was nothing of the sort.

The common view of Ireland internationally was, "oh jesus , look at what they have now done." Many followed , but not for good economic reasons.

good point however I found it interesting that ch4 would say that the world followed Britain and looked to them to lead them out of the crisis. It was also interesting to see that it was Gordan Brown who was implementing the measures and not Darling while here it was Lenihan with Cowen backing him.

C4 blowing the British trumpet should not be seen as anything interesting.

Here, it was allegedly Lenny making the call but who knows. The 2 Brian's, a few bottles of Paddy and an overnight session in a Dail office are what led to the decision. The fact that the rest of the cabinet, let alone the rest of our elected officials were not consulted should be enough to get the Brian's on the dole.

He no. He made a big mistake, pissed off mch of europe who had no choice but to copy Ireland to avoid a terrible outflow of cash.
