The conspiracy has already begun over on the flu thread, it's all about increased government control apparently. 'Sh1t happens' is the only outlandish and implausible explanation to some people, it seems....

Actually very few people in Ireland die from MRSA. I would hazard a guess that more people due as a result of the flu each year.

Mortality rates from C.diff would be much higher than mortality rates from MRSA bit even those would be low.

The problem with swine flu is unique.

Pigs are extremely unusual in that they are not only susceptible to pig flue but also human flu and avian flu. This leads to the possibility where three separate types of virus may be present in a pig at the same time which would lead to the possibility of an avian flu picking up some information from a human flu allowing it to infect the human population.

Ok the media may explode the possibility a bit and hype up the possibility but it is still significant risk and one that has to be taken seriously. However the chances of it actually reaching Ireland and becoming a serious problem are pretty low.

Given the state of our health service at present, I hope and prey that you are right.

And how many people do you think have flu like symptoms this morning ?

If you were reading the papers (especially tabloids) and woke up this morning feeling head-achy and tired, had just come back from Mexico what would you do ?

Its not that long ago that Bird Flu was going to wipe us all out.

These things have the potential to be extremely serious but that's a long way from actually being a serious problem..

The US cases are showing no reported deaths and all patients are reported to be responding well to treatment. When you see mortality rates of 50% or even 30% its time to start panicing.

Thousands of people die of the flu every year in Europe, hundreds of thousands catch the flu every year in Europe. Of course now in the tabloids every single head cold and flu will be automatically swine flu and every death a pandemic.
