Tesco feel that they will get away with this because the new store is not on the same location as the old store. Is this a sign of things to come?

Redundancy is dismissal, the only difference is the employer would be likely to give this person a good reference for another job, and if you do re-hire the person back, there are all new terms and conditions, however short time lay off is a different thing. The job position is still live unless that particular dept is closing

If tesco do re-hire and the person takes the redundancy, they can apply for a new job at the other store, but be prepared to start all over again with holiday entitlements etc

I wonder... how long before half of Tesco's workforce is replaced with machines?

Think I'm kidding? Look at the number of "self service" automated checkouts that are springing up everywhere. They are making human labour dangerously close to being obsolete ( and their numbers are only going to increase as the machines become more sophisticated and customers get used to using them ).

50 years ago, people were served by an attendant at petrol stations who filled thier tanks for them. That job is history. Now you can get your cinema tickets online, or pay at a machine, get your airline and train tickets from a machine and even check-in to hospital with no human contact.

How long before the human checkout cashier has gone the way of the Dodo, like those gas pump attendants of old?

You've probably already seen these at Sainsbury's and Tesco. A store can have up to 12 of these machines being operated by a single supervisor. The machines don't take breaks, they don't go on holiday, they don't require pensions and they don't join trade unions. It's no surprise then, that last year Tesco in the US opened the first store where ALL checkouts are automated.

Cashiers have much to be worried about, me thinks.

It is the interests of every worker to stop this. I won't darken their door until this is resolved. I'm no leftie but in a free market I choose not to support this company.

    Well said....

That's exactly what will happen, most employee's live in Douglas, Frankfield, Maryborough, Rochestown, and there will be a solidarity amoungst the community.

They have pi$$ed the entire community off with the construction of that feckin thing anyway, here's to hoping........

The Farmers did it when Ford closed in the 1980's, this could be a watershed in modern Ireland.
