jesus I worked for them years ago and they (in Dublin anyway) back then anyway were always considered a very good employer. I am surprised by this. I'd love to name and shame the bas***** that sacked me recently. I am disputing it with the union next week and if that gets me nowhere I am going to the rights comissioner and it that gets me nowhere, well I guess you will be seeing me on the telly.

Treat people this way and leave them with nothing to lose then they will lose.

Well if the staff were organized i.e in union this could not happen.

Tesco feel that they will get away with this because the new store is not on the same location as the old store. Is this a sign of things to come?

I think so, you're only a number on a pay packet, no employee loyalty any more if you are treated like that. In saying that, employees are expendable and it seems to be policy at the moment, the old senario divide and rule. ie public/ private sector.
PS My son, worked for them a few years ago (summer work), employees had to be a member of a union, obviously things have changed.

I think there is very much zero chance of Tesco succeeding in an EAT case taken by anyone whose job & related T&Cs are not given back. I'd be happy to bet quite a bit on it.

Fake redundancy like that which has been alleged here is very clearly outlawed by EAT precedent.

Every year, dozens of sleeveen employers try to get rid of people by giving them redundancy, and every year the EAT gives them a horrible surprise. They have to pay back pay to the employee, re-hire, re-engage AND pay their solicitors.
When you see the words "Mises" or "Hayek" in someone's post, just ask yourself: do I really want to ban paper money and go back to gold?

You have to pity the kind of people who buy into conspiracy theories. I find the following to be the saddest words on the internet: "Re: connection between Bilderberg puppet lady gaga and viral outbreak in ukraine "

    easy hire and fire

well, unfortunately its what happening. companies are getting rid of 'old' staff who r on high wages n permanent positions and replacing them with 'agency workers' whom get paid minimum wage on contract basis and mostly agency workers are from Eastern europe. and they r happy getting 9euros/hr .

my friend told me that the company he used to work for. before 2004, 20 staff working were Irish, but aftermath of May2004, company brought few agency workers , now around 16 'agency workers' are from eastern europe on minimum wage. his company did exactly, what tesco is proposing now. and why not its bloody 'EASY TO HIRE & FIRE'.

I think tesco, like aldi, lidl are still profit makin companies so what they upto??

other guy who was working at m50 extension site around 2004, he was saying before 2004 there was great money in construction labour jobs, but after 2004, buliders prefer taking in foriegn lads instead of Irish lads cos 'foriegn lads are hard working & very very cheap' yeah 14 euros/hr compared to 8.65!!!!!.

he was so pi**ed as he seen his wages coming down cos of the avaliability of labour. he didnt accept lower wage, left the job and started driving a van instead.

It is illegal to sack or make redunant people. And then replace then with another in the same role.

Tesco are closing down a store in Douglas Shopping Centre. The staff at that store will be given statutory redundancy. Claims for unfair dismissal will fail because the store is closed and the jobs no longer exist.

Coincidentally Tesco will be opening a brand new store in Douglas Shopping Centre. The jobs at this store will not be the same jobs that were at the other store because it is at a different location ( 50 yards from the old store)
