My understanding is that the Gardai an already use covert surveillance, but that it can't be used as evidence.

The new Bill will allow its introduction as evidence.

It may make for stronger cases against criminals, and reduce our dependence on witnesses, but ultimately, its like trying to crack a nut with a tooth pick.

The war on drugs has been lost, despite what the armchair generals think.

Legalise drugs now and do away with the need for these dangerous laws.

Can you imagine listening to some gurriers in Limerick..............

    Cream Cracker 1 "Awright Sham!"
    Cream Cracker 2 "Grand Sham!"
Cream Cracker 1 "Had your sister last night!"
    Cream Cracker 2 "Where?"
Cream Cracker 1"'bove in Toman' Park after de match!"
    Cream Cracker 2 "Fook you."
    Cream cracker 1 "Claim ya!"
    *sound of gun shots*
Cream Cracker 1 "C'mere I want ya. I've blood on me new tracksuit!"

Can you imagine sifting through hours of it?

Its does seem like a lot of effort to go to in order to crackdown on a few scumbag families in Limerick & Dublin.

I'm not too worried though, even if this does make into law, good old Irish government incompetence, red tape and lack of funding will turn it into just another unenforced and unenforceable boondoggle.

We are in a very serious situation...and it is getting more serious by the day.
Gardai never needed an emergency to commence bugging.

It has been going on for long before the admission by Doherty and has been continued since.

The gardai have been bugging for yonks as regards the rest, dream on.

There are many many different avenues where the Gardai and the legislators can strengthen the laws pertaining to criminals without impinging on the freedom and rights of its citizens.

Not necessarily. Plenty of BA types have fluent Irish. I have no doubt they've the capability, albeit their technology might be a little bit behind Arabic andChinese computer surveillance technology.

The Yanks have done it for Californian gang-speak.

It's only a matter of time before Garda computers will be able to automatically decipher Limerick gang-speak.

Notice how it's the innocent people who talk properly are the ones who find their private phone conversations are indefinitely logged on State computers.

Customs and Revenue will be allowed to use surveillance technology under this Surveillance Bill.

If Mary McAleese signs off on this, any respect I had for her will be gone forever.
