Pope to acknowledge suffering at Canadian schools

TORONTO – Pope Benedict XVI is expected to acknowledge abuse of aboriginals at Christian-run schools when he meets with survivors later this month at the Vatican, a spokesman for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops said Wednesday.

From the 19th century until the 1970s, more than 150,000 Indian children were made to attend state-funded Christian schools as an effort to assimilate them into Canadian society. Nearly 75 percent of the 130 schools were run by Catholic missionary congregations.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologized in Parliament last year, calling the physical and sexual abuse of children at the schools a sad chapter in the country's history.

..The United, Presbyterian and Anglican churches have apologized for their roles in the abuse.

The Canadian government has admitted that physical and sexual abuse in the schools was rampant. Many students recall being beaten for speaking their native languages and losing touch with their parents and customs...

Canada has offered those who were taken from their families compensation for the years they attended the residential schools. The offer was part of a lawsuit settlement between the government, churches and the approximately 90,000 surviving students.

Maybe you should shut your mouth and stop being so selective with your disdain. Particularly when it's against an organisation who are taking huge steps towards genuinely irradicating themselves of the disgusting evil of child abuse.

Chip on your shoulder regarding the Catholic Church by any chance? Or do you regularly conveniently ignore abuse inflicted by all the other groups and organisations?

I just believe people who have been victim of crime should seek recompense. Imagine that!

Isn't it amazing how much common ground people share if they can manage to set their differences aside in a civilised manner?

By the way this is not about any other group. So why do you said i ignore abuse by other groups. Just making random statments about me do not make them true.

The Pope is not apologising on my behalf. I am not apologising for sins I didn't commit, nor should the Pope.

As the pope is christs represenative on earth. And the head of the church and indeed it infallable moral authority. I suppose this is why he feels he has to apologise.

P.S. It a hard position he is in. Atonning for sins/crimes of others.

He's only infallible in matter of faith and doctrine, not in any other.

Who will apologize for the crimes committed by the Communists in the USSR, China and many, many other countries during the 20th century?
