    Britain may build 11 new nuclear power stations

    I see Britain is thinking of building 11 new Nuclear power stations. It’s a pity they haven’t identified Northern Ireland as a site for one of them. It would give great employment and have the added benefit of giving the anti-nuclear brigade in Ireland a collected dose of the hissy fits.

    Nuclear power is the best available power source for the medium term. I am a fan of it but we should probably hold out for workable fusion at this stage, Cadarache in France is nearly built (9 years away) and Britain and the States will have fusion by the 2020's.

    ITER is an experimental reactor you know. It might not work as planned nor produce the power expected.

    Its a good idea to stimulate the economy and provide jobs. Sadly they can not guarantee that British workers would get the jobs. From that perspective there is only the longterm benefits of a nuclear power plant instead of the added bonus of securing work for Britons and boosting Britons economy.

    Good on them. We should co-build one of them in the North as part of a softening up process that would eventually lead us to building one in the South.

    Sure the perfect location for one of them in Northern Ireland would be the old Maze site, and atleast we will still be able to buy cheap British electricity generate by nuclear power by the connector between both islands. Another irish solution for an irish problem

    I believe Padraig MacManus, CEO of the ESB, when asked, would Ireland ever have Nuclear power,replied Yes.
    When asked where the power station would be located, he replied "Wales"!

    Nine of the locations identified by the Government have previously been home to nuclear reactors, while the remaining two are close to the former Sellafield reactor site in Cumbria.

    The list consists of

    • Dungeness in Kent;
    • Sizewell in Suffolk;
    • Hartlepool in Cleveland;
    • Heysham in Lancashire;
    • Wylfa Peninsula in Anglesey;
    • Oldbury in Gloucestershire;
    • Hinkley Point in Somerset;
    • Bradwell in Essex; and
    • Sellafield, Braystones and Kirksanton in Cumbria
    Reading on to page 2 of the article, people mention the job creation opportunities for locals. They are in for a big suprise like those of East London.
