O'Keeffe may make college fees decision after elections

MINISTER FOR Education Batt O?Keeffe is expected to delay making a decision on the introduction of college fees until after the local and European elections in June. The Minister will circulate an options paper to his Cabinet colleagues on student charges within the next fortnight.

    More from The Irish Times.

O'Keefe may as well make the announcement now, with all the Budget levies hitting peoples pockets in May, one more piece of bad news before the Local and European Elections isn't going to make much difference to the voting population's perception of FF and their partners in Government.

I'd agree. Politically, they should have gone with a "bring out the garbage day" tactic. They should then have followed that up with a week of good news and/or positive maneuvers.

Of course, this present crowd couldn't find their own backside with both hands and a mirror.

While I hate this government and FF in particular with every fiber of my being, I have to say that I was against the whole free fees thing from the start. They should have used the money to extend the grant to more students and also raising the maintenance grants.

Furthermore, it is the primary level that should have gotten more attention. But of course this sector of the education system is less sexy.

Totally agree, best to write-off the locals and Euros (where the public habitually give the government a bloody nose anyway) and do what needs to be done on third level fees asap. Personally I favour low interest loans.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

primetime bit on it last night
    RTÉ News: Prime Time

there an over emphasis on thinking that a 4 yr degree is the smartest option, its not imagine committing to four years and thousands of pounds , if you're poor go do a cert, diploma and then degree, you can move around easier, change direction of course, avoid wasting money.

second bit is interesting as he they argue over whether rich people should pay their taxes or uni fees
