    Civil servants on 'Privilege leave!'

Everyone is back to work today, exept the civil servants who are on a privilege day. Two extra days payed leave outside of bank holidays , sick leave, annual leave, apparently. The civil servants it seems get two days privilege leave. One of which is, it seems, the Tuesday after Easter. Everybody takes the days on the same day. One today, one after Christmas.

    Hmmmmmmm........

No, they are in addition to Annual Leave

They've been in existence for decades now and in recent years journalists have picked up on it an tried ringing Government Departments on the Tuesday after Easter and noting the number of offices closed.

It was brought in decades back when the majority of civil servants were low paid and from outside Dublin (we're takin' way before decentralisation). the privilege day was to allow our these single country folk time to travel back up to the Big Smoke after spending Easter with their Mammies.

Obviously it's part of the past but of course once you've got the day you don't give it up too easily.

It should be abolished.. but will anyone see any savings due to increased productivity by our Civil Service? If all civil servants are working an two extra days a year will we reduce staffing numbers.. doubt it.

No they are not counted as part of annual leave. Apparently they date back to a more genteel time in the old pre independance civil service. Urban legend has it that they were brought in to allow Civil Servant time to get back from the country...presumably by horse and cart.

In similar vein, the Courts do not sit in Summer so as to allow judges time to harvest their crops. Apparantly vast swathes of D4 are still under tillage.

In fairness, I get 2 days extra per year on my existin annual leave and I am in private sector (good friday and christmas eve are "company days off"). After 5 years service my annual leave goes up from 22 days to 25 days per year.

What are leave entitlements for public sector workers ?

Damien on Liveline... Discussing the Privilege days.A public servant phoned in to have a go at the 'begrudgers'. Damien asked" You mean those people who went to the FAS office today only to find it closed?"
" Yes" She answered. He then said " But it was closed on Friday and Monday and today also". The woman replied indignantly " Why do they have to go there?!...there's plenty of other places to find jobs".

It depends on the position/scale you are on. The further up the scale the more annual leave days you get. When I was there I had, I think, 30 days per annum plus privilege days.

Listening to liveline was hillarious, majority of callers were public sector workers displaying the entitlement culture, no suprise given theres so many with today off and RTE's defence of public sector.
