Now more than ever is a time for a general election.
The measures in the budget and the toxic bank are going to effect the next generation.

FF & Greens will not call it as they would obliterated.

    Never thought of that!

But what happens AFTER the Election?

Who will be the new Government?

    What will they do different?

    What will they do better?

The NAMA is the least worst option I have seen proposed. Where is Fine Gael's alternative? Where is Labour's alternative?

They don't have one, but they are getting great Grandstanding opportunities from ranting on about the Government's plan.

actually FG do have alternative proposals on a variety of issues (budget, job creation etc. .... it's on their website). Regarding NAMA -- Richard Bruton proposed the notion of a good bank (essentially taking the deposits and viable loans from all the other banks) and leave the existing banks to work out their remaining loan books . The risk is therefore taken by investors in those original banks ... not the taxpayer.

Fine Gael News - Govt recapitalisation may not work: FG ?good banks? alternative must now be considered - Bruton

So in answer to your question, that is the FG alternative. Whether you agree with that or not - that is your opinion, but it is untrue to say they do not have an alternative.

btw: The FG proposal was published on 10th Feb.

The FG proposal was a blatant attempt to protect shareholders in the Banks, but it still left the taxpayer with the liability for the toxic banks left behind.

The issue of the asset valuations is a short term problem, and it effects Banks because their valuations always have to be current.

The NAMA proposal puts these long term assets in a vehicle designed to manage them over the long term, and frees up the Banks to get back to short term lending.

A proper "Good Bank" model would see brand new Banks being set up with clean balance sheets - none of Fine Gael's ridiculous attempts to pander to the shareholders in AIB and BOI - but this would not be accepted by the Sovereign Debt markets who would bankrupt the Country in a shot.

NAMA is the least worst option, but it does provide a clear routemap of how we get from here to where we need to get to.

But I'm still waiting for someone from Fine Gael to explain how we are going to run our transport system when they ban mineral diesel in 2015. Am I correct about the Rickshaws?

Then the next GE will be in 2012.

This NAMA ideas si a fairly good one. The State will own the land and properties it takes up the debt on. Land doesn't go away and disappear very often, it tends to stay in the same place, so that's a long term prospect which the Gov't can do but the banks cannot.

Twice in his budget speech Lenihan tried to blame the current economic mess on the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty! Did FG or Labour attack him on this blatant falsehood? Not a bit because they want their own snouts in the European Gravy train. Our opposition is a disgrace and thats why Fianna Fail are still at 30% when they should be at 10 because people think they are all the same. Why did Gilmore not attack Lenihan on this huge lie?

I though they were all the same.

The problem with politics in Ireland is that both the main parties are blatantly populist rather then splitting along a left/right divide. If they were one or the other they would have to have principles that they could be held to, rather then basing policy on whatever the think is going to hold on to/get into power.

Its governing by opinion poll, not policy.
How can you tell when a politician is lying?

Yes, we need an election now, its time for a fresh start. But its not just going to happen, FF know that if there is a GE they will be out, so they'll never call one. The only chance is for the people to make the Greens realise that by staying in power with FF they are dooming themselves as a political party. If that happens, then maybe they will leave and this gov will be done. Personally i dont see it happening...but we can pray!

The opposition deserve their chance, this government are serial failures and must be removed from office, witout undue delay.
