Seachtain na Gaeilge CD reaches no 6 in the charts!

For the second-year running a CD featuring singers/bands singing songs in Irish has been released. Last year the album got to number 4 in the Compilation charts.

This years album is a double-cd and is at no 6 in the charts now.

Given the rise in calibre of many of the singers and bands this year, are you confident that more English-language singers and bands in Ireland will start producing songs in Irish, like, for example, Sterephonics do in Welsh?

I'm confident that the album will go up higher in the charts this week. It was no. 6 for the week ending 16th March.

If The Corrs and other bands are happy to perform songs in Irish on CD's they should be happy to perform them on stage, and occasionely release songs in Irish, or have songs in Irish on their B-Sides on their singles.

The Corrs have two songs in Irish on their latest album 'Home'.

Funny, they haven't been released on single. You'd nearly think that there was little demand for the Irish-language amongst the general public.

How long before a CD in Polish or Chinese takes the No 1 slot?

    Now there's a thought!

The success of the Irish language depends largely on how it is presented. We have to accept the current model is broken. I mean, Leite Dhonncha Pheig is hilarious to reminisce about now but it was grueling when you were 15.

Hector did wonders for the language, and BBC's new programme, Stuif Ceart is excellent- trust the BBC to outdo the Irish at Irish (yes, yes, I know it's BBCNI, but still). If this CD is another contribution to popular Irish I'm all for it.

It seems every euro invested in the language outside of the local authorities and the classroom is worth two inside them. I think we need to look into why that is.
We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the internet, we know this is not true.

Its a question of supply and demand. This year when the singers and bands were asked to contribute a song, all of them were delighted to and I think all of them had heard of the success of last years album.

In answer to my own question, yes I do think that more bands will be producing songs in Irish in. The trend is going upwards.

    What about TG4?

Probably. The problem is that so many people look at Irish from a State point of view. CD' like this are helping.

Exactly, but that was the case. As a girl from TG4 said in the Sunday Indo a couple of weeks ago- Irish is healthy. Its like someone who was sick but is now better but everyone keeps harking back and saying "Yes but she was so sick."

People harking back to the past is a big impediment. Granted there are still problems, but I think its time everyone looked at them in the current context instead of looking back 20 or more years.

In all fairness Pidge, outside of the boyband circuit, only a handful of songs are released as singles off any album.
