March 2009 PPS Numbers -Allocation By Nationality

Well folks the latest PPS numbers have now been released and once again they make for shocking reading.

In March this year we had the following breakdown:

15,204 PPS numbers issued, of which:

7,079 issued to people from the Republic.

238 to people from the North.

7,887 to people not from this Country.

The breakdown for the year so far is as follows:

January 2009: 17,532 PPS numbers issued, of which 9,033 issued to people from the Republic and 238 to people from the North = 9,271.

So 8,261 PPS numbers issued to immigrants in January 2009.

February 2009: 14,377 PPS numbers issued, of which 6,881 issued to people from the Republic and 205 to people from the North = 7,086.

So 7,291 PPS numbers issued to immigrants in February 2009.

March 2009: 15,204 PPS numbers issued, of which 7,079 issued to people from the Republic and 238 to people from the North = 7,317.

So 7,887 PPS numbers issued to immigrants in March 2009.

That is a total of 23,439 more immigrants have arrived here and claimed a PPS number since 1 January 2009.

How can this be when there are so very very few jobs available and 80,000 people have lost their jobs in the same time period?

I just gave a job to a French national who arrived in March. About 15 people applied for the job, only one of them Irish, and he wasn't qualified.

Well as I have no idea what you hired him for I couldn't possibly comment.

By chance did you use a Job Agency or a public advertisment?

It seems 5,004 of them are EU nationals btw. But that begs the question as to why on earth the govt is still handing out so many non-EEA work-permits in the worst recession the country has ever seen.

We put an ad, and were about to go to an agency if we didn't find someone suitable this week.

I was very surprised we didn't get more Irish people applying. I'm told there is a recession on. About 1/3rd of the applicants were from foreigners not even resident in Ireland.

I'd like to know how many are to students, and what proportion actually take up work.

    what was the job?
there could be a greater number leaving than gaining pps numbers though..but 25,000 or whatever it is since the start of the year, is a huge number of people to come to the country at a time when the labour market has completely imploded

As far as I am aware a PPS number is for Life.

Sorry I'm confusing them with work-permits. I would also add that everyone born in the State automatically gets a PPS no. You also need to remember that these figures don't tell us how many of those issued with PPS numbers earlier in the year are still in the country.

A PPS No. has already be issued to you if:
    • You were born in Ireland in or after 1971
    • You started work in Ireland after 1979
    • You are in receipt of a social welfare payment
    • You are taking part in the Drugs Payment Scheme.

My experience is that except for construction and retail, the job market is relatively health at the moment. Skilled IT workers are still in demand.
