If the current government goes to the polls any time in the near future they will face huge losses. Any backbencher worried for their seat would be best advised to push for a harsh, front loaded budget which gives them some hope of an economic recovery in a few years time.
General increases in taxes will make the country very unproductive and cause spiralling unemployment so while they might survive this, this will ultimately be their downfall.
Property tax: If this is introduced on everyone with a home who have already paid Stamp Duty. I think it unlikely though, the point being that if it is to be equitable then it does need to consider those who have paid Stamp duty, so no immediate revenue there. In addition, for property tax to be fair it should go hand in hand with restructuring the Stamp Duty thus reducing revenue in the short term.

How can anyone justify taking money off benefits?
To answer the question asked a slightly different way, Biffo needs to cut all TD salaries and Ministers by one third and convert their pension schemes from defined benefit to defined contribution, reduce the payout on existing pensions or tax them severely, wipe out Junior ministers completelt, reduce total number of Ministers to about 10 and total number of TDs by one third, reform and reduce the Seanad by one half.
Only when Biffo and his mates swallow the medicine can they be credible in dishing it out to others.
