The Higher Education Authority is playing down an 11% fall in applications for places in teacher-training colleges this year.
The fall has been highlighted in CAO figures based on college applications made by Leaving Cert students earlier this year.

It needs to be pointed out that while this reduction in applications refers only to Primary level teaching.
Applications to Post-Primary teaching programmes remains very high and compedition for place in the HDip courses is intense.

I wonder about the gender breakdown on this figure too. Males are not applying for primary teaching in any significant numbers at all now.
