Police have identified 200 British schoolchildren as potential terrorists, some as young as 13. [/SIZE]
The youngsters were identified through a police scheme which aims to spot children who are vulnerable to Islamic radicalisation.
Sir Norman Bettison, the chief constable of West Yorkshire Police and Britain's most senior officer in charge of terror prevention, said the project had intervened in at least 200 cases since it began 18 months ago.
..The "Channel project", run by the Association of Chief Police Officers, asks teachers, parents and other community leaders to watch out for signs that children are being groomed by extremists or appear drawn to their views...
..Its success has led to plans to extend it to the rest of London, Thames Valley, south Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, and West Sussex. The Home Office-funded project involves officers working alongside Muslim communities to identify impressionable children.
They look for signs of children being at risk of radicalisation or showing an interest in extremist material on the internet or in books. Once they have been identified, outreach workers of religious figures in the community, such as a local imam, then discuss their concerns with the child's family.
