Easter 1916 should not be celebrated with a military parade

    Hello all

I normally don't go in for this type of thing, but I just wondered if anyone else was sickened to the bone by the idea of a military parade for Easter 1916?

I looked for a petition or something to sign against it and couldn't find one.

So, I set one up - if anyone else thinks that it's inappropriate for a military parade to be used to commemorate Easter 1916, then you can sign the petition here: http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/no_military_parade

I'll let others do the politicising!

    Peter

I wouldnt want to see the free state filth marching up and down outside the gpo, anymore than the uda or british army.
The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show.
It is then we'll see the rising of the moon.

I'm not too enamoured in general with the idea of grandiose state commemorations of this nature anyway but I'm just curious as to why you consider a military parade in particular to be inappropriate.

hmm, interesting. It occurs to me that the military parade should include elements from all traditions at the end of the military element, to illustrate the inclusive ideals of 1916. Throwing in an Orange Order band, for example, would on the one hand diffuse the 'bar-stool republican' militarism you're worried about, while simultaneously redefining republicanism in a genuinely inclusive sense (as opposed to Sinn Fein republicanism, which is based largely on the gaelic/nationalist tradition, and violently opposed to the Orange Order).

Typical free stater attitude, "lets forget our history". Thats why they persecute and harass republicans, because we wont forget that our country is occupied.

How many times a day do you say the words "free stater"?

I haven't "forgotten". I just don't think it is. I read a large amount of Irish history, examined the definitions and concepts of "nation", "state", "country", "democracy", "self-determination", "national self-determination", and "occupation", and came to the conclusion that my country is not occupied and neither is the area known as Northern Ireland.

It may be re-assuring for you to believe us 'staters' have simply forgotten the past, or have been brain-washed by the west-brit elite, but it simply isn't true.
