This issue was discussed a few days ago by Pat Kenny. He read out an email from an Irishwoman who is an illegal immigrant in the US, asking that Bono get involved in trying to persuade the US Congress to stop the legislation that has already passed the House of Representatives to deport illegal immigrants in the US. Is our government right to be begging the US to let Irish illegals in the US stay?

In my opinion our govt is wrong and is being extremely hypocritical. They should not be supporting breaking the laws of other countries. While I would have some sympathy with people who left when Ireland was poor, I understand from media reports that some of these people left in the Celtic Tiger years. The latter is surely nonsensical and inexcusable. If we want our immigration laws to be obeyed, surely we should not be asking other countries to reward breaches of theirs?
