    More Job losses

Seeing as the Government, IBEC and the political and financial Establishment going on about how 'we've never had it so good' and basically telling us to stop moaning perhaps it's time we monitored the announcement of job losses that are taking place in the State to act as a guide to the economic slowdown where it really matters for working people.

Saehan Media Ireland Limited has announced that it is to close its plant at Hazelwood in Sligo in April with the loss of 91 jobs.

Clothing firm Magee is cutting 60 jobs at its factory in Donegal Town by June next year as it ends production in the town.

The company blames the high cost of manufacturing in Ireland and says it will continue to base its administration, design and marketing in Donegal Town, where it has operated since 1866.

It's no secret that the future for manufacturing in Ireland is very bleak indeed. There's really little point complaining about. There is nothing the government can do about it. Manufacturing costs in Eastern Europe are much lower than they are here so it is only natural that manufacturers will locate there rather than in Ireland.

Great, so why don't those EEs get jobs over there then?

Well, before I read that post, I would have mentioned how having an English-speaking population would help us get the non-manufacturing jobs - but now I'm not so sure.

    But for whom?

Even the CSO admit nearly half of all the jobs they can monitor are going to foreigners, so you can be sure it's worse out there in the Bla... sorry unregulated sectors of the Irish Economy.

Salaries in this country are about 10 times those of the Baltic states. That explains why, even in EE countries with lower employment, Ireland is a popular destination.

The French and Germans aren't coming here, as their social-welfare system is so overgenerous that your almost as well off on the dole. Poland etc. don't have those kind of resources.

But who these days is unemployed? Seriously, there's huge emloyment, recruitment agences are booming, it's never been better.

Mobile labour is mobile labour, it will us as easily leave when times get worse than stay here.

Well lets wait and see shall we. My purpose BTW in starting this thread was not to debate Immigration per se but simply to monitor job losses in the Economy.

I think that there is now a strong possibility that unemployment will continue to increase this year. If it goes above 10,000 more on the dole by years end then a review of where we are going will be forced on the Government if they wish to be re elected.

Same holds for Labour and SF if they want to convince voters too.
