    From the same article:

“I have heard Jim Higgins preaching about the Government wasting money. Then I see Jim Higgins going to Brussels, when he thinks you aren’t looking, and voting for €9.2 million to be spent on a swimming pool for himself and his friends. Well Swimmer Jim will have to answer to the electorate for that,” Mr Ganley said.
Ganley chose to pick a row and the times reported his words accurately.

Libertas are sick. The mainstream parties in Ireland are interested in all broad issues. Ganely is only interested in the EU and his paranoid notions of it. I am- and some people on this site would only recognise me i leith na Gaeilge- am interested in all broad issues in Ireland. Indeed heart wise I am more interested in getting a united Ireland than the teanga. Leaving these issues aside I am of course committed to ending abject poverty and creating the circumstances socially and politically so that all of our citizens can prosper. Ganley is only interested in the EU and his notions of how it is ********************ing us up the arse. Which is all in his imagination... He really is a sick individual.

It was Ganley who provoked the attack.

    2. Secondly, the editor does not write headlines or commentaries. Surely you know that.

Welcome to the weird world of the Libertas devotees - where every lie told by Libertas is the truth and any effort to point out the many holes in Ganley's bucket are smears. And also where paranoia and fantasy run riot, right down to imagining that when someone replies to a *************************y attack by Ganley, and it is reported, it is all some plot to undermine Ganley's embarrassingly twee little launch in front of a half empty hall.
I don't support Libertas. And the IT would not have taken that approach with the PDs, no matter had Mary Harney put a hex on someone publicly.

Now, am I paranoid also in saying you are NDS/MPH/Insider? I thought you promised you were gone from here?

That doesn't prove they have a specific beef with Libertas, unless it's something they only do to him. I accept they're adulatory about the PDs, but would they have done it to FF or any of the other parties?

They fawned over Ahern to my recollection, until the Tribunal pretty much nailed him. And McCreevy was a god among men to them...

Well, McCreevy seems to have been a bit of a PD pinup boy...they were always looking for a bit of his market discipline. Was that a pro-FF bias or a pro-Bertie bias?

Madam risked jail to expose Bertie.

Also, is your complaint that they show favoritism to some parties and only treated Libertas fairly?

It was one and the same thing for ten years, Ahern was Fianna Fáil.

My point here is the emphasis was chosen carefully by the IT. Fair enough, it is newsworthy, but I wouldn't have thought it was the main item of interest in the launch of Ganley's candidacy. There is a certain naivety on Ganley's part though, I'll say that, he'd be better to act as if he's above such things (although it never harms to play the wounded anti-political establishment martyr either now and again). For the record, I don't have a beef with Jim Higgins, I met him once in Cork, he seems a nice fellow.

Only when given the juiciest of juicy stories on him from somewhere, the story of the 'dig-outs' etc. For years before that he was untouched and untouchable.

No, it's that they show favouritism to some parties, and portrays anyone who opposes Lisbon as borderline certifiable, to the point of obsessiveness. I don't mind the normal coverage, analysis and criticism, I do mind what looks increasingly like a politically motivated witch-hunt by a paper that traditionally portrayed itself as above such things. (I have to add that, even by the new standards of the Irish Times, Stephen Collins' article last year advocating subversion of the democratic will in order to pass Lisbon was a new height of hysteria)...
