    President condemns publication of cartoons

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/0212/mcaleese.html

The President says "Ireland abhors cartoons". Excuse me but no we do not. We have a right in Western society to freedom of speech and we should not surrender that to Islamofascism. The Muslims need to chill out.

It is not for the West to adapt to Islam. It is for Islam to adapt to the West. Political-Correctness gone mad!

The real reason for these remarks probably has something to do with trying to cash in on Denmark's loss of markets in that region.

You really are a silly little man aren't you? Islamofascists? Does that mean that feminists protesting against cartoons that intimated that Emmeline Pankhurst was a prostitute would be feminazis? How would you feel, as a homosexual if you saw insulting depictions of gays?

"The cartoons" not "cartoons" (unless she was referring to those rubbish Halas and Bachelor ones that used to come on around tea-time on RTE1 in the days before The Den.

Also, you've no more right than Mary McAleese to claim to represent the views of the Irish people.

    What about Western Muslims?

It's a rather bizarre thing to say that Ireland "abhors" the publication of those cartoons.

Define a "Western Muslim"? I resent the way that the media tends to refer to immigrant Muslims in Ireland as "Irish Muslims" when they are not Irish. Hence, what do you mean by "Western Muslim"?

Not wishing to speak for FT but I'm sure he would be more concerned about the appalling treatment of gay people in Islamic countries. In Afghanistan, before the fall of the Taliban, two homosexuals were put to death by collapsing a wall on top of them and I'm sure thats not the only case of what is, to my mind, barbarism in Islamic countries.

I somehow doubt I'd be blaming the foreign government for it and burning down their embassy, or carrying "Behead the Infidels" placards.

That's pretty outrageous. Is anyone here convinced that the cartoons were published - either originally or re-publications - in a deliberate attempt to "provoke, be rude, or inflame"?

Even if she doesn't believe what's she's saying, and she's just lying to the Saudis to make Ireland look good, should she really be playing to their delusions and agreeing with them that the cartoons were published in a deliberate attempt to insult Islam?

    Non-immigrant Muslims.

If you want a narrower definition, given your racial biases, I could refer to Western converts to Islam. Take your pick.
