    World Migration Figures

Here are the top 15 recipients of immigrants in the world, and their respective percentage in the host nation.

United Arab Emirates 73% of population are immigrants.
    Kuwait 57.9%
    Jordan 39.6%
    Israel 37.4%
    Singapore 33.6%
    Oman 26.9%
    Estonia 26.2%
    Saudi Arabia 25.8
    Latvia 25.3%
    Switzerland 25.1%
    Australia 24.6%
    New Zealand 22.5%
    Gabon 20.3%
    Canada 18.9%
    Kazakhstan 18.7%
Only one of these countries is Western European, yet they make the biggest noise over immigration. Half the receiving countries are Muslim. The United Arab Emirates, which is overwhelminly Muslim receives almost 10 times as many immigrants per capita, than Ireland. Are we overreacting a bit to our own immigrant figures?

Should point out they're from 2004,(U.N figures) No seismic shift since then. But you get the picture.

Not knowing the provenance of these figures, I would have difficulty trusting them. But as with any demographic movements, it is not the numbers but the cultural similarities and absorption that are significant.

If you don't trust them, maybe you'd let me know what are the top 15. Are you suggesting there are no cultural differences between say the Kuwaitis and Saudis and it's foreign workforce?

...or indeed the Singaporeans and....no, wait, they're all immigrants. Surely there's no culture clash between a Catholic Philippina and a Wahhabi Muslim in Saudi, is there? I mean, they're all foreign already!

Cultural similarities? Tell that to the people of Northern Ireland. You'd be doing well to find two competing groups who are culturally so identical, yet who fight so much.

In any case, it's probably worth nothing the cultural breakdown of Irish immigration. According to the CSO [figures are for 2002, most recent I could locate easily]:

    37% of immigrants were Irish.
10% of immigrants were from the UK.
12% were from the EU-15 (this was pre-englargement)
    4% were from the U.S.

And the remaining 34% were from the rest of the world, a large portion of which presumably have come from Eastern European countries which are now part of the EU.

So, all in all, the vast bulk of our immigrants come from a culturally very similar group.

That's not to say, I agree that "cultural compatability" is particularly important or desirable per se. Just illustrating the facts.

You never pointed out the source of the figures. Without knowing the source, it would be foolish to trust them. (edit: Now I see you've added the source.)

But the immigration patterns are not broken down. And since they are not broken down, the figures can be used equally by the anti and pro camps. It is the context that matters most.

Owen, dear boy, I think these figures have been overtaken by events.

I did search the CSO site a bit for more modern ones, without success. Although I'd guess more modern ones are available on it somewhere.

If anybody wants to locate more recent figures and post, then please do so by all means. However, I doubt the % breakdowns have changed all that much in 4 years. The EU quota will presumably have gone up even more due to englargment.
