Why has Cowen walked away from the unions?

The union leadership clearly do not want serious industrial action to take place. They have delayed it for several weeks and had marches etc to keep the evil day away.

Why does the government not bring them on board? Everyone is up for a serious bit of cutting etc, they seem to be driving the unions off a cliff.

Surely a serious swing to the right is the end for FF if they follow thru'...

As long as somebody else cuts more.

Because politicans and the entire civil/public service management levels along with the higher levels across all arms of the state creamed it during the celtic tiger, and it appears to me they are unwilling to give any of it up, bar these across the board levy's,cuts. They know if they deal with the unions they will not get away so easy ,as the lower levels are well aware of the huge increases in pay they received during the boom.

I agree with you to a degree, but is there more to it?

Is a face off being sought with the unions to share the blame as well as the pain. ICTU needs to box very clever over the coming weeks.

Suggestions that everyone take a 10% cut are typical of this approach, why not cut to the extent your pay went up in say the past 5 years? Its easy take cut after a huge rise. Rises were not uniform but cuts should be?

I do not think Cowen is a stupid as he appears, the details of the levy may be intentionally flawed to cause a fight. He loves Harney and that kind of politics, I suspect he hates unions and the grass root type person. This could destroy FF grassroots support, they is no floor under the poll figures if this is the way he is going. Who in their right mind would support it?
