Magee has stepped aside from duties but remains bishop of Cloyne

Bishop Magee steps aside over Cloyne controversy - The Irish Times - Sat, Mar 07, 2009

Bishop John Magee of Cloyne has been replaced in his diocesan duties following criticism over his handling of child abuse cases in the diocese.

A statement issued by the Irish Bishops’ Conference in Maynooth today said Pope Benedict had appointed the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, Dr Dermot Clifford, to assume the powers and duties of the Bishop of Cloyne.

However, Bishop Magee will retain the title of Bishop of Cloyne.

The statement said Bishop Magee had made a formal request to Pope Benedict on February 4th last to appoint an apostolic administrator to carry out “the ordinary governance” of the Diocese of Cloyne.
this is frustrating, will he just go he doens't deserve the title, hopefully some group of school reps and parents has made enough noise to achieve this

I'm quite happy for him to retain that title. If the Church wants to demean itself and it's offices by letting such people hold them then it only furthers it's demise

i know we were equally frustrated with the fas and bank guys resigning thus avoiding taking full responsibility and having to answer for themselves but what this guy did was a resigning matter full stop.

A separate statement from the Cloyne Diocese today said the appointment of Archbishop Clifford would “enable Bishop Magee to devote the necessary time and energy to cooperating fully with the government Commission of Inquiry into child protection practices and procedures in the Diocese of Cloyne, as he has already committed himself to do.”
... i presume the someone else taking over his powers and duties means he's not in charge of child protection anymore.

@ GG i said that as an atheist(formerly and nominally a catholic) he doesn't deserve the title

Once a Bishop, always a Bishop.

It's a silly thread title. But it's not surprising given the way RTE inaccurately reported it this morning.

Also, I don't believe he'll be doing confirmations or any other formal proceedings that active bishops preside in.

As an Atheist why would you hold the title "Bishop" with any regard. I don't. The next time someone tries to use such a title as if it entitles them to some special consideration it will be remembered that that title is allowed to be held by any kind of scum. No quality or reverence can any more be assumed by people who are called that. I call that progress

    No you're just ignorant.

You can't be "unbaptised", you're always a priest, even if you leave the church, and you're always a bishop, even if someone else takes over your duties.

The Church is not a company where people are hired and fired.

As usual, all the anti-Church types cling on to these anomalys in the rules of the Church and seize on them for their own advantage. No matter what the Church does, it will never satisfy their thirst for public annihilation and cruxifiction of every thing and every person associated with the Church.

The fact that he's been effectively removed from his position demonstrates just how serious the Church is taking this matter. These kinds of measures are most unusual and are used only in the most serious of cases.

People need to realise that the Church have as much interest in seeing the timely application of justice as anyone else. Then can she go back to concentrating on the serious matter of trying to attone for past sins and begging for forgiveness.

These arbitrary rules were invented by the Church and so can be changed by the Church. The Church won't be judged by it's own standards it will be judged by civil standards. The Churches problems with changing it's own rules are it's own to solve. But don't think that the rest of the world is going to sit around and wait because it's too lazy to do so. Letting the office of Bishop be held in disgrace is a good incentive for the Church to to get it's act together and put in mechanisms to deal with people who disgrace that title properly. If the churches rules are the problem then it's the rules as well as the man who disgrace the title.

Glad that Bishop Magee realised it up to now but the damage has been done already!!!!!

NOT one Bishop in Ireland has spoken out in favour of Magee resigning except for Archbishop Martin.

Then why all the interest in Church rules that you obviously know very little about? Drastic action has been taken, yet you refuse to recognise this. Surely you must see the appointment of a new bishop as a positive step? Or are you going to remain hung-up in your feigned outrage over a side-issue -- the ins and outs of Catholic titles. The Bishop has effectively been dismissed from his duties. This is a man who has served as private secretary to three Popes and has born huge responsibilities for decades. Make no mistake about it, Bishop Magee being taken over from is a drastic step.

Do you want Bishop Magee excommunicated or something? Would that satisfy you? The man made some terribly bad decisions, but he certainly does not deserve excommunication.

Are you even Catholic? You should perhaps vent your anger more closer to home: at FAS chiefs who get €600k golden handshakes, rather than bishops who've worked their entire lives and now must step aside due to their failures, only to let someone else take over their life's work.
