    Public Sector Expenses

As a public sector employee i am entitled to claim .78€ per KM that i drive. I am also entitled to claim 133€ for an overnight stay. All of this is unvouched. These expenses are ludicrous in the situation we find ourselves in. These need to be reduced to reasonable levels immediately.

Fair play to you for putting that on the table.
Most union heads would consider this €133e overnight allowance reasonable even if the true cost of stay is substantially less than that.

What part of the public sector do you work in?

I work in the public sector too and ALL mileage has to be vouched for and is only paid out if the travel was essential as part of your work and if there was no public transport going to the area. If there is public transport then you keep your ticket and you get that money refunded.

You'd be surprised how many hotels don't have rooms for less than €150 if there is a Conference on. it is not always (it is sometimes) possible to get cheaper places t stay without incurring other expenses. This €133 (I presume) covers your food as well.

The vast majority of trips that I have gone on have cost me money which I have not sought back from the public purse.

€133 for a room and three meals isn't excessive.

€0.78 per kilometre is too high. At that price it would be better to tell people to hire cars and expense the petrol. But really, own car should be held for out of hours working or trips that can't be completed on public transport.

The price of hotels has dropped significantly in the past year. Expenses are considered by many to be a perk of the Job.
The practice of unvouched expenses cannot be argued as being acceptable. When i started this job just over 18 months ago i could not believe it. I know many of my colleagues stay with friends or family and claim the overnight expenses.
The mileage rates are also a nice little earner for many.

Then the problem is the vouching rather than the amount.

Mileage is always open to abuse. I know of an instance at a former employer in the private sector where a Dublin-based employee was travelling to Cork on a weekly basis and expensing the mileage, but travelling on the train.

However, the mileage rate was at least only €0.45 per km there. He still made a tidy profit on every trip though.

Thats my experience too. Actually, if you wer e'milking the system', its better value to go for 10hrs and come back rather than stay overnight, you end up better off. Mileage is definitely too high in terms of costs, the rest - doesn't compensate at all.

God help you if you try to save money by getting an Oyster Card and then have them try to wriggle out by saying they can't distinguish personal and business trips...

Thankfully, the Oyster Card allows you to get a print out of trip details online.
