    But let's just take the dimensions you quote - 2km x 15m:
Let's say you could line up 25 people across a 15 metre-wide road
And created such a rank every metre of the length - that 2,000 ranks of 25 which = 50,000.

How does that sound to you?

What I saw on tv was a marching band with nothing like that density, a group of marching gardai with nothing like that density, and a large group of strolling protestors with banners, placards, people with kids in buggies etc etc and plenty of room for everyone, no-one in danger of being crushed to death.

I've no idea how many marched today and I'd be perfectly happy if it was 100k.

But these nice round LARGE numbers are beloved of organisers and protestors who, naturaly, are keen to claim maximum support for their cause.
Such claims must always be treated with caution.
Without wanting to seem repetitive I understand that official garda estimates are over 100,000. They have a wee bit of experience in this crowd estimating lark.

A bit of a farce to see Peter McCloon, the fattest of the FAS fat cats addressing the crowd.

ICTU Leaders have to respond to the mass revulsion to this Levy. this will mean losing their cosy relationship with the Govt and IBEC. This movement is being lead by the Union members around the country and some in the ICTU leadership have to answer the call or stand aside. It's a real test of their metal...

And the Gardai were also participating in the protest.
A bit of a conflict of interest when it comes to estimating the level of support for the protest, don't you think?

There was a LARGE turnout for the protest. I think we're all agreed on that.

Whether it was 50,000, 100,000 or 200,000 is irrelevant because to get that sort of high numbers requires a shaking of the apathy that is endemic in Irish society.

    Well done lads.

    Is the title a typo?

Even the untrained eye could tell it was well into the tens of thousands.

It started before 2 o'clock because Parnell Sq was too full and there was still marchers arriving at Kildare St at 3.50 (I left at that point)

nope...believe it or not that at 2.15 when i posted this thread, rte were actually reporting 10,000, while simultaneously the Times were reporting 50,000!

I personally was wondering if RTE had an agenda!

    Then you're down to 24-30,000.
    That'll never do!

How many per sqm there, would you guess? Don't see many gaps, do you?
