Charles Kennedy admits seeking help for drink problem

It's being reported that Charles Kennedy has admitted seeking help for a drink problem, and is calling a leadership election within the Liberal Democrats.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

Are you certain, he was very bullish on C4 News last night.

Nope it's true, one of the much overused Breaking News boxes is on Sky as we speak.

One of the key problems the Lib-Dems ahve faced is their leader not been taken seriously as an alternative PM.

He was on his way out anyway poor guy. He wasn't a good leader but the problem is there is no suitable heir apparent.

I agree that he was/is unimpressive, but he did lead his party to its best ever GE result, which people seem to forget. Having said that, he's been a dead man walking for a while now, and for the sake of the Lib Dems, he needs to be got rid of asap.

Does the fact that he has an alcohol problem make him unsuitable to lead a major party? In previous times many senior politicians were steaming alcoholics, Churchill being the obvious case. Yet another example of how the puritanical standards we demand of our politicians today would have prohibited the success of some great leaders if applied in their times

Nice move by Kennedy. He knows no one is brave enough to stand against someone that has just admitted to having a serious medical problem. It would be unseemly really and whoever did wouldn't get elected and would have their career ruined.

As for whether he should remain as leader, not watching British politics that close I won't comment. However, he did lie repeatedly about it and, according to the article on the BBC website, has only been on the wagon for two months.

Churchill was a sh*t leader. He'd have made a good king, but he was a sh*t First Lord of the Admiralty and he was a ************************ war-time Prime Minister.

Not necessarily. It's possible that a relatively new MP could stand against him as a stalking horse, who won't win, but will gain enough votes that Kennedy's position would be untenable and he'll step aside, allowing a real leadership competition. After a few years, no one would give a stuff.
