Lenihan tells Dáil of fight for 'economic future' as he introduces pension levy Bill

THE GOVERNMENT has to borrow €4,500 this year "for every man, woman and child in the State", the Minister for Finance said as he introduced the controversial public sector pension levy legislation which comes into effect on March 1st. Brian Lenihan told the Dáil that "we are now fighting for our economic future" and the scale of the threat to the public finances was such that "painful decisions must be implemented as a matter of urgency".

Does this mean pension funds won't be invested in cluster bombs? Atleast it might save some lives.

Can the Government not nationalise the Corrib Gas Field? I read somewhere that there is an estimate of €450 billion down there. Surely that would pull us out of the hole we're in.

    €450bn!!!
What was your source for that.
Ultimately we would need a private company to do it but there is certainly scope to have a government shareholding in these assets.

That is a government that has taken on far too many spending commitments.

And pay who to expoit it at a time of dropping gas prices? We do not have a national company capable of expoiting Corrib, and are never likely to have one either.

Sure thats not too bad, i'll make an appointment with the credit union for this evening and send up the cheque.

Sure isn't there a crowd in Liverpool asking for £5000 off a 100,000 supporters in order to buy the club, surely we can all pitch in and buy the country!

All that said i'll actually be paying about 3 or 4 peoples share by the end of the year so someone else can go to the credit union.
