Government move to protect Community Rating

Minister for Health, Mary Harney, has announced her intention to introduce 'risk equalisation' in the health insurance market. The measure will ensure that all health insurance policyholders pay the same premium regardless of their age or health status.

Bupa responded today by securing an injunction preventing the Minister proceeding with the measure. The matter will now be heard in full on February 7th in the High Court.

Shouldn't that be "Minister for Health Mary Harney, supposidly a member of a liberal party, has done the most socialist thing she can think of by forcing a company to provide direct payments to it's main compitition, a spokesman for Harney said 'the PDs never siad we were a liberal party...nope...errrr...never'"

These guys have totally lost the plot...seriously GET THEM OUT!

So we don't have private healthcare. we don't have Universal Healthcare,. we have a half arsed mismash of the two, badly managed, with a duopoly in insurance, who NOW PAY EACH OTHER!

There's already a thread on this here, and I think it's been discussed a few times in the past.

And thanks for mentioning the High Court date, Maximus.

    Just a note Maximus.

The majority of the posters here, have at least some small interest in Politics and Current Affairs.

Its therefore reasonable to believe that we watch the news on TV or listen to it on radio.

Why then do you feel you need to take it upon yourself to tell us something has happened ? Are you working for the Government Press office or something.

If you want to make a comment on something fair enough, but personally this sort of ************************e is taking up space, nothing else.

You could have at least given an opinion on it, Maximus.

Coconut - had intended to but had to leave my computer. ROC - No I'm not employed by the GIS or any such body. Was just raising the issue to start a debate on it. Libero - missed the original thread.

I support the move; “Community Rating” is probably the best way of ensuring everyone can afford Private Health care should they so wish. In this context it is appropriate the concept is extended to cover the entire market. I’m surprised posters from FG and Sinn Féin backgrounds are opposing the measure.

This has been in the pipe line for years, no doubt Bupa will kick up a fuss (naturally they have to protect their shareholder’s profits) however in the end I don’t think they’ll have any option but to absorb the costs.

I'd imagine Max, that the only reason a SF poster/member might have for opposing this particular measure, is that it is inevitably only an exercise in "fattening the calf" for the eventual sell off of another state asset into the private sector.

As always, I have a difficulty also in ordinary working people feelign the need to pay private health insurance, to access the public health system.

Haven't Bupa blocked the proposal already?

That is just your spin on it.

    Community rating already exists.
