    Enda Kenny's undemocratic behaviour

This thread is not about whether or not Irish should be a mandatory subject for the Leaving Cert.

It is about the manner in which Enda Kenny raised his proposal.

On the Friday before their annual conference was to begin in Cork, Enda Kenny said to the media that it should be optional. On the following Monday Fergus Ó Dowd told TG4 that it was their party policy.

However, it has since come out that several TD's are against the policy and angry because a vote was never held on it. Dáithí Mac Carthaigh, the President of Conradh na Gaeilge, said that some FG members were "up the wall" about it.

Surely this an unbelievable matter of undemocratic behaviour in Fine Gael.

Can we expect other policies by Enda Kenny if he were Taoiseach that haven't been voted on by the party?

I'd hope so. This is Enda Kenny showing leadership. He was elected as leader of the party and as such, is entitled to lead.

Besides, this isn't exactly a new policy for them. Fine Gael had proposed this in '61 and '73 too.

Ya don't ya hate when people do things like that. I mean i'm still fuming over Donagh O' Malley's decision to introduce free 2nd level education. He never even consulted his cabinet like. imagine the cheek of that.

Anyway who are 'up the walls about it', or is this just more lies.

Do you think Gerry has a vote on everything he says in public, do you think everything a govt minister says or comes out with has been voted on by his party first, hello Noel Dempsey how are ya.

What a useless thread, i can't believe i actually spent three minutes responding to it.

It hasen't been their policy since then though, and there was no vote taken on it in 2005.

Indeed. Votes don't need to be taken at every policy crossroads - it's leadership. Bertie wouldn't base every aspect of government policy purely on what has been voted upon by FF.

If FG are against what Kenny has proposed they can overturn the policy at their Ard Fheis.

Votes should be taken on, at least, all major issues. This mighen't be a major issue for you but Enda Kenny certainly has made it out to be a big issue.

I couldn't imagine Bertie Ahern advocating this as FF policy, particularly without the FF party (whether it be the parliamentary party or at an Ard Fheis) voting first.

That's really not how it works. While many policies are confirmed at Ard Fheis level, it is up to the party leadership to steer the party. This is why parties introduce new policies throughout the year - not just in once batch.

No, he doesn't eat them - that would be stupid.

He murders them and their families for fun.
