McDowell admits leaking documents to Irish Independent.

The Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, has said that he supplied documents to the Irish Independent for their story on allegations that Frank Connolly had applied for a false passport.

Mr McDowell also said he was protecting the security of the State when he told the Dáil that Mr Connolly had travelled to Colombia on a false passport.

The former journalist denies visiting Colombia and has accused Mr McDowell of abusing his ministerial position

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's News at One, Mr McDowell revealed that he had given the bogus application forms to the newspaper.

He said he did so because it was not a confidential document and the people were entitled to know.

Mr McDowell also said he released the document because 'on a previous RTÉ programme remarks had been made that suggested that there was no truth whatsoever in these questions that were being raised about Mr Connolly'.

McDowell is using the same excuses used by the Nazis for the night of the long knives..'protecting trhe security of the reich/country'. This man is so odious that even Bertie is starting to distance himself from his excesses. l

Standing next to his notion that he can choose to set aside the Consitution when he believes there is an ill-defined and not explained threat to the state I am genuinely shocked. I mean I knew he was mad but this....

McDowell has committed a serious criminal offence which I understand carries a very long-term in prison (If the files form part of a Garda criminal investigation). If any civil servant where to do this and be caught they would be sacked and would be questioned by the Gardai.
Now no doubt we will see serious double standards by McDowell, he can break the law if he wants. It’s a disgrace and he should go straight away, but he wont.

With all this matter-of-fact talk about McDowell breaking the law and setting aside the constitution, I look forward to the inevitable civil legal actions against him.

No doubt counsel are being briefed at this very moment, right?

what are all you other Shinners cribbing about. Remember, we don't have rights. Haven't you copped that on from the time this same nonsense went on in the 70's and 80's, when Gardai intimidated employers to sack workers with Republican sympathies.

    Constitution, what constitution ?

Of course by doing this, he has effectively insured that the person in question, who may have been charged with an offence, probably never will as a result of this intervention.
When a Minister for Justice adopts for trial by media rather than through the criminal justice system then you gotta say their sell by date is well and truly up and they should go!!!

His comments regarding SF when he was AG should have seen him sacked but didn't for some reason.
